Standing Firm: Living a Christian Life in a World That Refuses to Define Truth
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (ESV):
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
Introduction: Can We Talk About Truth?
As Joan Rivers used to ask, “Can we talk?” Our world today is having a hard time answering that question—at least, honestly. The very idea of truth seems to shift with every new trend, hashtag, or headline. Now, you often hear, “That’s your truth,” or “This is my truth,” as if truth is as changeable as the weather. This isn’t just talk from college classrooms or on social media—even, at times, it comes from the pulpit.
But as followers of Jesus, we need to ask: Does this shifting definition of truth align with Christ’s message? How are we supposed to live as Christians when the world insists that absolute truth doesn’t exist, that we should just go with what feels right?
The Bible reminds us that this isn’t a new problem. In the book of Judges (21:25), we read: “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” And even Pilate, standing before Jesus, shrugged: “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38). The real challenge isn’t about intelligence or education—it’s about the atmosphere we live in. In our culture, truth often gets decided by popularity and convenience, not by anything deeper or eternal. It’s getting harder to separate fact from fiction, right from wrong.
What’s alarming is that even inside the church, statistics tell us we’re drifting away from moral standards. People are picking and choosing their values, sometimes for comfort or approval. Relativism is seeping in without us even knowing it.
But church, here’s the hope: Faithfulness to God is still possible—even today. The Holy Spirit calls us to live differently—to anchor our lives in God’s unchanging truth, even when the world calls us foolish for it. We are called not to perfection, but to perseverance. We don’t have to surrender to confusion or uncertainty. God is still the author of truth.
I. The World’s Crisis: The Rise of Relativism
Recent headlines say it all. Time Magazine asks, “Is Truth Dead?” The Barna Group finds that only 35% of American adults believe in absolute moral truth. For teens, it’s even less. We’re constantly bombarded by debates about “fake news” and “alternative facts.” The cultural rule seems to be: “What’s true for you may not be true for me.”
But the Bible’s declaration is clear and radical:
John 14:6: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Truth isn’t relative. Truth is a person—Jesus Christ.
II. The Dangers of Undefined Truth
Moral Confusion
When society abandons objective truth, right and wrong become mere opinions. We see the impact in debates about identity, morality, and life itself—confusion and brokenness follow.
Isaiah 5:20: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness…”
Loss of Trust
If everyone has their own truth, our trust in each other and in institutions erodes.
Psalm 11:3: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
Without truth as a foundation, even the strongest society will crumble.
III. The Christian Response: Anchored in God’s Word
God’s Truth Is Unchanging
Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Isaiah 40:8: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
The Authority of Scripture
Paul’s warning to Timothy could not be more timely:
2 Timothy 4:3-4: “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching... and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
Paul urges us: Stand firm! Don’t let culture dictate your convictions.
IV. Living Out Truth in a Relativistic World
Be a Light
Matthew 5:14, 16: “You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others.”
In a world drifting in the dark, your faithfulness is a testimony.
Speak the Truth in Love
Ephesians 4:15: “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ…”
Truth must be spoken with grace—never as a weapon, but as a gift.
Practical Steps:
Know God’s Word: Study and meditate daily to discern truth from error.
Reject Fear: Don’t let public opinion or “cancel culture” intimidate you.
Uphold Integrity: Speak truth, even when it costs you.
Show Compassion: Everyone is made in God’s image—win hearts, not just arguments.
Pray for Discernment: Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom in complex situations.
Example:
Recently, a Christian teacher in a school board debate stood up for biblical morality, speaking with research, kindness, and respect. She didn’t win the argument, but her unwavering integrity and courage planted seeds of truth and respect.
V. The Hope and Power of Truth
John 8:31-32: “If you abide in my word... you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Living by God’s truth brings clarity, freedom, and spiritual health. Even in a confused world, people are hungry for something real—something steady.
VI. Final Challenge and Encouragement
Be Courageous
Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Standing for truth requires grit. You may face ridicule, but you are not alone—God stands with His people.
Be Faithful, Not Fearful
As Ravi Zacharias said, “Truth that is not undergirded by love makes the truth obnoxious and the possessor of it repulsive.”
Let’s show the world a better way—the way of Christ: conviction with compassion.
Prayer
Lord, in a world of shifting sands and changing opinions, help us to stand firm on Your truth. Give us wisdom, courage, and a deep love for others. May we reflect Jesus in all we say and do, bringing light to darkness and hope to confusion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Conclusion: Anchored in the Truth
The world may redefine or ignore truth, but God’s truth remains. Let’s embrace His Word, live courageously, speak gently, and shine brightly.
John 17:17: “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
May we live as people set apart—anchored in Truth, for the glory of God. Amen.
