The Five “E’s” of Church: A Blueprint for Christian Community

Our understanding of the church—its mission, purpose, and daily life—can feel muddled in a noisy world. Yet when Jesus charged His disciples with the Great Commission, He laid out a blueprint that remains relevant to every congregation today. In Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV), Jesus says:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

From these words, we draw the Five “E’s” of the church: Evangelism, Encourage, Edify, Exalt, and Equip. Each “E” highlights a dimension of what it means to be God’s people together. Let’s explore each one.

1. Evangelism: Sharing the Good News

Evangelism lies at the heart of Christian identity, echoing Jesus’ command: “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20). Evangelism is more than preaching on a street corner. It can be a heartfelt conversation, an honest testimony, global missions, or even a simple act of service that reflects Jesus’ love.

Digital platforms have opened new avenues for evangelism—think podcasts, YouTube, or social media posts that reach far beyond church walls. Yet evangelism isn’t reserved for pastors alone. Paul’s encouragement in Acts 1:8 and 2 Timothy 4:5 is for every believer: share the hope you have, in word and deed.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8, ESV)

At its core, evangelism invites others to enter into a relationship with Jesus—a journey rooted in love, truth, and transformation.

2. Encourage: Building Each Other Up

To encourage is to breathe courage, hope, and energy into another. Whether it’s a word of affirmation, a helping hand, or a supportive community, the church is called to be a place of uplifting and inspiration.

“Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV)

Encouragement gives us the strength to persevere, nudges us toward good choices, and helps us overcome discouragement. The church, with its small groups, prayers, and fellowship, is a living support network that reflects God’s desire for His people to “cheer each other on” in faith and life.

3. Edify: Building Up the Body

To “edify” means to build up. Spiritually, it means nurturing faith, helping people grow, and strengthening the community in Christ.

Paul’s instructions in Ephesians 4:11-12 clarify this calling:

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”

Edification happens as we teach, pray, serve, and spend time together. It’s a team effort—each person using their gifts to help others mature in faith. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 14:26:

“Let all things be done for building up.”

4. Exalt: Worship and Honor God

The word “exalt” calls us to lift God above all—giving Him the honor He deserves. Worship is not merely singing but a lifestyle of recognizing God’s holiness and sovereignty.

“Exalt the LORD our God, worship at his footstool! Holy is he!” (Psalm 99:5, ESV)

The ultimate example of exaltation is Jesus Himself. Because of His obedience and sacrifice, God has exalted Him to the highest place:

“Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” (Philippians 2:9-11, ESV)

Exalting God is the church's upward response—keeping Christ at the center and humbly serving Him in all things.

5. Equip: Preparing for Service

Equipping means making ready—providing the tools, support, and spiritual empowerment so believers can live out their calling. From practical preparations in the Old Testament to the spiritual readiness emphasized in the New Testament, equipping is essential for every believer.

“Now may the God of peace… equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ…” (Hebrews 13:20-21, ESV)

In Ephesians 4:12, we read that God gives leaders “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Each believer is called to discover, develop, and use their God-given gifts in service.

Bringing the Five “E’s” Together

The Five “E’s” are not a checklist but a living cycle—connecting outreach, mutual encouragement, spiritual growth, worship, and readiness for service.

Evangelism reaches out.

Encourage keeps spirits strong.

Edify deepens faith.

Exalt honors God.

Equip gets us ready for His mission.

If churches embrace these Five “E’s,” they become places where grace is experienced, faith grows, and every member is empowered to serve. It’s a vision for a church that is alive with love, fueled by the Spirit, and marked by lives that reflect Christ.
